Not too loud, not too quiet or "getting the sound right"

Audio that is too loud during commercials is the most common complaint to broadcasters. It can cause viewers to switch channels – not what an advertiser wants! – and is increasingly the subject of legislation.

The problem is: you receive a file – how do you know that the loudness and peak levels are correct? The broadcaster is responsible for the loudness of commercials transmitted (and all other programs), so the broadcaster will be fined if the loudness is too high.

File-based media are still relatively new in the broadcast/content distribution industry, with most companies in the transition from tape-based to file-based. The audio in these files can be in many different formats, and there can be multiple audio tracks / streams. And aside from the loudness / volume question, what about the other audio aspects? Is the audio phase correct? Is the right audio codec in the file, in the right configuration?

In this seminar you will learn about:

  • what are ‘loudness’ and ‘true peak’ and how they are measured
  • overview of the BS.1770 standard for audio measurement
  • the different implementation standards for audio compliance being applied in North America [ATSC A/85 RP] and Europe [EBU R128]
  • the structure of file-based media and where audio fits in
  • audio QC and common errors, including differences between file-based and digital/audio media and comparison with older measurements such as PPM meters
  • practical implementation considerations including correction and ROI
  • VidChecker QC solutions

Specific examples will be given of the above issues, together with examples of solutions.

Getting started in Auto QC of File-based Media

Image alt

File-based media are still relatively new in the broadcast/content distribution industry, with most companies in the transition from tape-based to file-based.

Media files have many different characteristics and many of their own challenges, particularly in the area of Quality Control.

A simple example: you asked for an MXF Op1A file, containing MPEG-2 HD 1080i video, AAC audio, at 29.97 fps, GOP size 15, with the correct loudness. You receive a file “Movie_HD.MXF” – but is it as you requested? Is the bit-rate correct ? Is the video legal? Is the audio phase correct?

In this seminar you will learn about:

  • file-based workflows; sending & receiving files
structure & formats of file-based media
  • QC and types of errors
  • differences from digital transmission and analog
auto QC requirements and solutions, including automation
  • other implementation considerations
  • the Vidchecker solutions (incl. demo)

Specific examples will be given of the above issues, together with examples of solutions.
